Although historically in the shadow of the Gloster Meteor, the de Havilland Vampire may have been the second jet fighter to enter Royal Air Force service, but was a hugely significant aircraft in its own right.
The first RAF aircraft capable of exceeding 500mph, the Vampire was also the first single-engined jet-powered aircraft to cross the Atlantic Ocean, marking it as one of the most important of the world’s early jets.
The FB.5 fighter bomber was the most important variant of the aircraft with 1123 aircraft built and 930 seeing service with the Royal Air Force – those destined for service overseas were designated FB.9 and had cockpit air conditioning.

Aunque históricamente a la sombra del Gloster Meteor, el de Havilland Vampire fue el segundo caza a reacción en entrar en servicio en la Royal Air Force, pero fue un avión muy importante por derecho propio.
El Vampire, primer avión de la RAF capaz de superar las 500 mph, fue también el primer avión monomotor a reacción en cruzar el Océano Atlántico, lo que lo convierte en uno de los primeros reactores más importantes del mundo.
El bombardero de combate FB.5 fue la variante más importante del avión, con 1123 aparatos construidos y 930 en servicio en la Royal Air Force; los destinados al extranjero se denominaban FB.9 y tenían aire acondicionado en la cabina.
