Feat of Divers
In the first days after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, firefighters fought the blaze by pouring water over the fire and sprinkling the ignition chambers with sand and pebbles. This helped to prevent potentially terrible consequences. Five days later, however, the situation became more complicated as the reactor continued to melt, gradually destroying the concrete slab beneath which a huge pool of water lay. The contact of the roasted mass with the water could release a giant cloud of radioactive water vapor into the atmosphere. To prevent a possible disaster, the pool had to be drained immediately so the situation required to involve people with scuba diving skills because the access to the resistance taps was underwater. Three people were involved into this operation. Divers knew that they would be exposed to radiation in the pool, but safely reached the shut-off valves. It took them a few tries, but they were up to the task, and their feat became a legend.

La hazaña de los buzos
En los primeros días tras el accidente de la central nuclear de Chernóbil, los bomberos combatieron las llamas vertiendo agua sobre el fuego y rociando las cámaras de ignición con arena y guijarros. Esto ayudó a evitar consecuencias potencialmente terribles. Cinco días más tarde, sin embargo, la situación se complicó porque el reactor siguió fundiéndose, destruyendo poco a poco la losa de hormigón bajo la que yacía una enorme balsa de agua. El contacto de la masa calcinada con el agua podría liberar a la atmósfera una gigantesca nube de vapor de agua radiactivo. Para evitar una posible catástrofe, había que vaciar inmediatamente la piscina, por lo que la situación requería la participación de personas con conocimientos de submarinismo, ya que el acceso a los grifos de resistencia estaba bajo el agua. Tres personas participaron en esta operación. Los buceadores sabían que se expondrían a la radiación en la piscina, pero llegaron a salvo hasta las llaves de paso. Les costó varios intentos, pero estuvieron a la altura y su hazaña se convirtió en leyenda.
